Happy New Year!!!
The Little Apple New Year's Eve Celebration and Ball Drop has turned into one of
Manhattan's most popular winter traditions. For the fifth straight year, several
thousand spectators and revelers will gather in Aggieville on New Year's Eve, at
the corner of Manhattan Avenue and Moro Street, to ring in 2008.
This year's celebration will feature live musical entertainment by Mainstreet
Band
along with a laser light show, followed by a fireworks show over City Park.
"We appreciate the opportunity for Manhattan and all of our businesses to be center
stage during the event and see the event as another way to maintain Manhattan as
an entertainment destination," said Steve Levin of Varney's Bookstore, who is helping
organize the event. "We hope to continue to have the opportunity to entertain
people from outside Manhattan and expose them to all our community has to offer."
As in previous years, the highlight of the evening will come at midnight, when the
crowd counts down to 2008 as the large apple over Varney's drops down to mark the
New Year.
The evening's festivities will begin at 10:30 p.m. when Mainstreet Band opens its
performance. The laser light show will run at the same time and will run in-synch
with the music. There will be a short recognition of localdignitaries prior
to the ball drop as well. The band will play "Auld Lang Syne" after the ball
drop as midnight strikes and will continue to play as the the crowd celebrates the
beginning of 2008.
Each year, the event has attracted larger crowds, beginning with 4,500 spectators
in the first year to 10,000 in 2006. In the past, the event has also garnered
attention for The Little Apple through coverage by national and reginal news media
outlets.
